Rhiwbach Slate Quarry and its tramway

Manod - now known as
Welsh Slate's 'Cwt y Bugail Quarry'

Manod quarry is set in a spectacular location some 1500 feet above sea level.  Looking south across the Migneint, the long mountain in the centre of the photo is Arenig Fawr.  Weather conditions at the quarry in the wintertime are often very harsh.

The main quarry face

The modern extraction of slate is a brutal process.  This view shows the results of the opencast techniques latterly employed.  The slate bed can be seen in the centre of the photo.  To the left of it are some of the, once underground, chambers of Graig Ddu quarry.
